Sporting Contact Improvisation (SCI)

by René Alvarez
“the ground is coming”
—René Alvarez, 2010 ( InterKinected.org )

Inspired by the flowing ride sensation and alert focus on one’s center of weight found in sports like snowboarding, devoted CI dancer René Alvarez from OAKLAND, CA, has developed a set of parameters for practicing CI that enhance listening through one’s center and extend periods of momentum-based flow. René defines flow as “harmony in connection in a dynamic and multilevel dance, where center and balance are always shared.” René calls his technique Sporting Contact Improvisation, or SCI, and has written a detailed explanation of the practice that can be found at InterKinected.org.
